  13. AUSTIN, TX, January 10, 1991--Logica Research today announced SIMMpack™, a
  14. memory expansion board for the Macintosh Classic.
  15. SIMMpack provides Apple dealers an opportunity to increase the profit margin on
  16. an upgraded Mac Classic, since it uses surplus 256K SIMMs that dealers either
  17. already have or can be purchased very inexpensively.
  18. SIMMpack is an expansion card which plugs into the Classic’s memory slot. It
  19. contains 6 SIMM sockets, four for 256K SIMMs and two for 1 Mb SIMMs. Added to
  20. the Classic’s 1 Mb of standard memory, a SIMMpack-equipped Mac Classic allows
  21. 2, 2.5, or 4 Mb of total RAM.
  22. Other memory boards available for the Macintosh Classic have 1 Mb of RAM
  23. mounted directly on the expansion card and two SIMM sockets for standard 1 Mb
  24. SIMMs. The SIMMpack, on the other hand, allows dealers to “recycle” 256K SIMMs
  25. from other Macintoshes. Such SIMMs previously had no other use for end-users or
  26. dealers.  (SIMMs as slow as 150ns are usable with SIMMpack.)
  27. The Mac Plus, SE, II, IIx, IIcx, IIci, IIsi, and LC have all shipped from Apple
  28. with four 256K SIMMs installed. Until now, when those computers were upgraded
  29. using 1MB SIMMs the remaining 256K SIMMs had no further use.   SIMMpack offers
  30. the dealer a way to reuse the old SIMMs instead of paying for RAM on the
  31. expansion card.
  32. Dealers that sell Macintosh IIsi and LC systems will benefit greatly from the
  33. SIMMpack.  With an optional hard drive mounting bracket, dealers can remove not
  34. only the four 256K SIMMs to install on the SIMMpack, but also the 40 Mb disk
  35. drive from a IIsi or LC to install in a diskless Classic, creating a Mac
  36. Classic 2/40 with more profit. Since most IIsi/LC buyers require more than 2 Mb
  37. of RAM and 40 Mb of disk storage, the dealer also increases profits on the IIsi
  38. and LC systems by providing customers with higher capacity RAM and storage
  39. options.
  40. The list price of  SIMMpack is $99 with zero memory, and is available through
  41. XML Corporation of Austin, Texas, a distributor of Macintosh-related products.
